GOES-R Weather Satellites and the Challenges In Reaching Orbit

In today’s world, technology is improving at a rapid pace.  Many opportunities are available to take advantage of all the information that is available with this new technology. The new generation of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series (GOES-R) is headed into orbit in 2016.  While these new satellites will be useful once in orbit, it is important that force and torque testing is done to make sure these satellites can handle the launch process, and will be able to operate in the space environment.



What is the GOES-R?


The GOES-R is the latest in a long line of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). For over 40 years, the GOES have provided imagery and data of atmospheric conditions and space weather, covering the Western hemisphere. Unfortunately, that means that the GOES are also operating with outdated technology – in fact, there hasn’t been a major advancement since 1994. The GOES-R changes all that, utilizing a new imager that provides more information, more coverage, and improved resolution, with images as frequently as every 30 seconds for major weather events.

How Will GOES-R Data Help Us?


GOES-R will allow us to collect and analyze data for frequently and accurately, and allow for better evaluation and prediction of weather. This can include:

  • Short-term weather forecasts and sever storm warnings and watches
  • Maritime weather forecasts
  • Drought outlooks
  • Improved hurricane, tornado, and thunderstorm tracking in order to provide advanced lead times for warnings.
  • Collecting data for long-term climate variability studies

This can lead to everything from improving flight routes to avoid weather-related delays, to helping warmers evaluate crops and production, up to saving lives by providing extra time to find safety during major weather events.

What Challenges Do the Satellites Have to Overcome?


Sending a satellite into space isn’t easy.  The challenges in getting an object out of the earth’s atmosphere and through its orbit are numerous. Going back to the earliest days of NASA, the complex array of materials, components, and assembly methods made the difference between a successful launch and a failure. In particular, force and torque measurement are frequently employed to gauge the performance of materials, components, and manufactured assemblies, such as bearings, cables, fasteners, and more. Proper testing is critical; once a satellite is launched, it cannot be brought back to Earth for maintenance.

Responsive Packaging to Reduce Food Waste

Food shortage and food waste is a sensitive problem. Over the past few years, the US has wasted close to 31% of all the food it produces, and typically consumers in the U.S. throw away about 80 billion pounds of food each year. Improper or poor food packaging can be the cause of this waste in many situations as the food inside can spoil or discolor if it is not sealed and packaged properly. In an effort to cut back on the amount of food wasted and disposed, intelligent food packaging solutions are being developed which will change the way food is packaged and transported.

How Responsive and Intelligent Packaging Can be a Game Changer:


While still in the research and development stage, the basic concept driving responsive packaging is the ability of the containers in which units of consumables are stored and transported to react to external stimuli.

Food might be affected by five kinds of chemical reactions – oxidation, moisture seeps, enzymatic browning, non-enzymatic browning and microbial activity. Responsive packages are specially created to:

  • Change color if any of these reactions trigger so that the “sniff” test is replaced by real and accurate indicators 
  • Release counter chemicals that inhibit these reactions (like the release of BHT/BHA to act as preservative) to extend shelf life 
  • Give visual indicators for items that must be consumed immediately on opening to remind buyers of the time gone by 

Ideally responsive packaging will increase food safety by using preservatives only, and the goal is to cut back on food waste by meeting all FDA guidelines.

The Benefits of the Medical Device Tax Suspension

In 2013 the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was enacted. Part of the legislation called for a 2.3% tax on sales of medical devices in the US, by both domestic manufacturers and importers.  Since the implementation of the tax, it has not produced the expected revenue.

Originally it was expected that $30 billion would be raised from the tax due to increasing number of Americans covered by health insurance and, therefore, receiving medical treatment. However, that number came up short. During its first year it only raised 60% of those estimated taxes.

The tax ended up being costly to small businesses, resulting in layoffs, cutting of research and development projects, and ultimately delaying some expansion plans. The additional tax disproportionately affected small and medium sized business, who already struggled under the growing industry regulatory structure.

Realizing the strain this tax was causing on small medical device manufacturers, on December 18, 2015, the Consolidated Appropriations Act was signed. This act began a two year moratorium on the medical device tax, starting January 1, 2016 and expiring December 31, 2017. Researchers have noted that the suspension of the tax will positively impact the medical device market in the US. The money that would have been spent taxes can now be invested in human resources, research and development, manufacturing expansion, and other areas.  This positive reaction from industry leaders and government officials may lead to a permanent repeal of the tax once the suspension period ends.

National Safety Month and Ergonomics Testing Kits

Each year in June, the National Safety Council  promotes National Safety Month.  This is an annual event to educate and influence behaviors around the leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths in workplaces, on the road, or in homes and communities.  

Many injuries in the workplace occur due to repeated tasks that involve lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling heavy loads and working in awkward body positions and postures.  Injuries from these tasks can lead to musculoskeletal disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, muscle strains, rotator cuff injuries and lower back injuries. In an effort to reduce and prevent such injuries, the science of ergonomics has proven invaluable.  Ergonomics studies help recommend appropriate designs and arrangements for repetitious tasks so that they are efficient and safe. The goal is to fit an appropriate job to a particular employee, with the goal of lessening muscle fatigue and increasing productivity.

  • Aerospace: Applications from bearing torque testing to bend strength of materials to seatbelt release force are important in quantifying the performance of these components and materials. Mark-10 Makes a Difference on Earth Day

In the more than 40 years that we have celebrated Earth Day, a lot of progress has been made around the globe in limiting pollution, waste, and reducing energy consumption. Government and industry cooperation has led to technical breakthroughs that improve our quality of life and reduce our environmental footprint, with the ultimate goal of making the best possible use of natural and renewable resources. While much work remains to be done, we can point to some tangible progress.

For example, the solar energy industry has offered homeowners an alternative to dirtier sources of energy while contributing to the power grid. The automotive industry has also continually pushed the technological envelope by producing more fuel efficient vehicles, including electric and hybrid options.

In developing these new technologies, manufacturers of materials, components, and final assemblies must consider a great deal of testing. For example, in increasing vehicle fuel efficiency, auto manufacturers have reduced weight where possible. Materials have been thinned and mechanical assemblies modified. Physical testing of new components, including force and torque measurement, comes into play. For the solar industry, peel, tensile, bend, and many other tests are important in guaranteeing the performance of solar panels and related equipment.

As far as our products are concerned, “green” has been a natural outcome of our efficient designs. While some other instruments guzzle energy via large battery packs and power-hungry electronic designs, Mark-10 products sip energy. In recent years, we’ve stopped printing user’s manuals and reduced the printing of catalogs. We’ve invested heavily in making our website as chock-full of information as possible, so that anyone can access information with reduced impact to our forests.

New Software has 2016 off to the Right Start!

At Mark-10, we’re looking forward to another exciting year.  

One of the first things to note is the launch of our new website, as mentioned in our 2015 Accomplishments blog! The new look adds improved and easily accessible navigation tools, enhanced content, and clear links to products, downloads, videos, FAQs, and handy unit conversion calculators.

We’re proud to introduce MESUR™gauge Plus software, combining test stand start/stop commands with data collection. That means that the operator only needs to click once to simultaneously start the motion of a test stand and collect data.

Behind the scenes, we’ve invested in new equipment, particularly in our state-of-the-art CNC machine shop. Measuring the Accomplishments of 2015

We’re starting 2016 off on a good note, but before getting ahead of ourselves, let’s take a look back at the past year and highlight some of our proudest achievements.

2015 was a very exciting year with many new innovations and developments. The most noticeable change for our customers was the redesign of our website. The new, clean site is easier to navigate and includes additional technical information, enhanced readability, graphics, and an overall fresher look. The Industries and Applications section has been particularly well received as a helpful resource in which to assess our products’ applications by industry.

Last Spring we launched two new products. The new ESM303 Motorized Test Stand advances an earlier version (ESM301), with several enhancements to improve the user experience – quieter operation, improved cable management, USB output, automatic position memory during power cycles, and many other enhancements, while still maintaining an attractive price.

Our new WT3-201M motorized wire crimp pull tester is an all-in-one solution for measuring wire terminal pull-off forces of up to 200 lbF. Features include an auto-start function that begins when the sample is loaded and auto-reverse at sample break. Pulling to a load and maintaining a load is also possible, along with the ability to save multiple test profiles. Testing throughput is increased with automatic data storage and statistical calculations.

We’ve also invested in new production equipment. We’re particularly proud of our new Haas 5-axis CNC milling machine, able to mill complex shapes from a variety of materials, all while reducing setup time – thereby leading to greater throughput and accuracy.

This year we’re actively planning more additions and enhancements to our products, capabilities, and other initiatives. Our goal, as always, is better engineering, better products, and a better user experience.

Mark-10 Partners with the NYPD

How much force should be required to pull the trigger on a gun? Although the debate continues, the NYPD requires that the firearms they issue to their officers require a higher than normal amount of force, in order to decrease accidental gun discharges. The NYPD’s Firearms Laboratory modifies off-the-shelf guns, but their method of testing the actual trigger force has been cumbersome and prone to inconsistencies.

In previous years, trigger pull force was tested by hanging a predetermined weight on the trigger. Lab personnel were instructed to hold the gun body in the upright position. If the trigger did not engage at that preset weight, the firearm was deemed acceptable. NYPD lab personnel ultimately found the varying results of this test unreliable.

Today, the NYPD has partnered with Mark-10 to implement a better and more reliable process. We worked closely with the NYPD to develop a customized firearm test stand. It accommodates a variety of gun types and sizes. The stand also allows the Firearms Laboratory to measure trigger forces in a controlled manner.

Our solution delivered repeatable test results and when transmitted to a PC, also provided additional statistics and data. We found that more information could be derived from this type of test, as opposed to a pass/fail result. We are pleased that, in this small way, we’ve helped the NYPD reduce the occurrence of unintentional gun discharge and potentially save lives in the process.

Quality Control in Food Processing and Packaging Industries

September was “National Food Safety Month” in the U.S. This 30-day event reminds us of the importance of food safety in more than one way. Although the food itself is of the utmost importance, quality control in the food processing and packaging are of the same rank. National Food Safety Month reinforces the message that effective quality control measures are needed to ensure food safety.

Now that we’ve hit October, it’s important to remember that food safety and quality control are necessary throughout the year, and here at Mark-10 we’d like to remind folks that we can help out on the quality control side. In recent months, the topic of food safety has been at the forefront of the industry and customers alike, with widely publicized recalls related to food packaging malfunctions, contamination, and other safety issues. One example is last month’s recall of cheese slices. Another example is the recall of ice cream products earlier this year.

The topic of food safety needs to be addressed on an ongoing basis. What specific steps can
professionals within the food industries take now? Food industry professionals are advised to review food safety strategies to ensure compliance with food safety regulations. Additional advice suggests that food safety professionals take the time to create “a written food safety plan that identifies and evaluates known or reasonably foreseeable hazards for each type of food manufactured, processed, packed or held at the facility.”

Quality control should be at the heart of any safety plan. It can be achieved and maintained in food processing and packaging by implementing preventive controls to monitor and perform verification activities, confirming controls are working properly. A few examples of preventive controls would be process controls, recall plans, and testing.

Using Force Measurement to Ensure Product Integrity

Mark-10 force testers can be used in a variety of industries. We focus heavily on uses in the packaging, medical, and automotive industries, but did you know that our products have also been used to test the integrity of candle wicks?

A candle manufacturer approached Mark-10 when they needed to improve their production process to help minimize rework and recalls. When a candle is made, the wick must be centered and straight throughout the entire profile of the candle to ensure the candle burns evenly. Most candles have a wick secured to a metal clip crimped to one end, which helps to stabilize the wick during the candle manufacturing process. Tension is applied to the free end of the wick during the wax solidification process to ensure it stays centered. However, the tension could end up separating the wick from the clip, resulting in a manufacturing failure and lost product. 

To help the candle manufacturer reduce these failures, Mark-10 supplied a pull tester that measured the force required to separate the candle wick from the clip. The tester then transmits the data to a PC for further analysis, which helped the candle manufacturer improve quality and consistency of their products.

Mark-10 Unveils New Motorized Wire Crimp Pull Tester

Building on the success of our manual WT3-200 wire crimp tester we have recently announced the addition of a motorized model, the all-new WT3-201M wire crimp pull tester. The WT3-201M is a motorized wire crimp pull tester that is an all-in-one solution that is designed to measure pull-off forces of up to 200 lbF for wire and tube terminations. The tester is suitable for a variety of industries and features selectable test speed with high speed approach and reverse, auto-start upon sample insertion, pass/fail indicators, audio alerts, and more. On-board data storage and statistical calculations is provided for up to 2,000 readings, with available date and time stamp for each saved data point.

The WT3-201M can accommodate wire sizes up to AWG 3 as well as custom sizes via the available machinable blank fixture. The tester conforms to numerous UL, ISO, ASTM, SAE, MIL, and other requirements for destructive testing. Mark-10 Launches New Motorized Test Stand



At Mark-10 we are always working to offer our customers the best force and torque measurement equipment, which is why we’re announcing our newest motorized test stand, the ESM303. This new stand replaces our ESM301 Motorized Test Stand and offers several improvements and enhancements over the ESM301.

The ESM303 Motorized Test Stand features a column that completely encloses the motor, which significantly reduces noise, offers improved aesthetics, and has a more rigid column to reduce deflection under load. We have also internalized and streamlined the cable connections for a clean, ergonomic look. The gauge interface cable attaches directly to the crosshead, and powers the gauge so no AC adapter is needed. We have also included a USB output so a USB converter is no longer needed.

The current position is now memorized between power cycles. The ASCII command set for PC control now includes all Mark-10 force gauge commands. The control panel has dedicated FollowMe™ and Zero Travel buttons and the FollowMe™ function moves the crosshead at a variable rate of speed, proportional to the amount of force applied by hand to the force gauge’s load cell. The available Profiles option allows the user to save, name, and recall up to 50 test setups (i.e. speeds, distance limits, cycles, etc.). Additionally, the controller mounts to the side of the column and can be easily removed for remote operation.

The overall height of the ESM303 is similar to the ESM301 but the new stand features a modular mechanical design that allows for single- and double-column extensions to accommodate a variety of applications.

New Packaging Made of Both Rigid and Flexible Materials

Ana’s Food of Austin recently became the first commercial customer in North America to use both rigid and flexible material. The container features a square, injection-molded tub with flared sides that are made from rigid polypropylene posts. Then four panels of flexible and printable PP material are fused to the posts to create the sides of the container.

The company’s main objective in reformatting its packaging was to improve the sustainability and the new container uses up to 50% less plastic than regular salsa tubs. The polypropylene container is also 100% recyclable and the new design allows for easy stacking which can help reduce costs in shipping and stocking.

The trend for more sustainable packaging seems to be continuing to grow as we previously wrote a blog post about the market, which is predicted to reach $244 billion by 2018. Food manufacturers and packaging companies must ensure that the lighter packaging will still meet quality regulations as well as customers’ expectations. The Future of 3D Printing

These days it seems that 3D printing can be found in every industry, and now it’s even in space. On November 24th, 2014 Made In Space successfully 3D printed the first part at the International Space Station (ISS). Although in the past, parts have been 3D printed on Earth and then sent to space, this was the first time a part was manufactured in space. This printing marks a milestone in the technology which could make it possible to easily print replacement parts for the ISS.

More research must now be conducted on the parts that were printed in space to ensure they are of the same quality as those printed on Earth. A control group was printed on Earth and the parts printed in space will be sent back to Earth to undergo tensile strength, torque, and flexibility testing. These tests will help the Made In Space team make adjustments on its second 3D printer, which it plans to send to the ISS early in 2015.
